What car insurance generally is

A car policy is a contract with an insurer covering the car described in it. The policy wording decides what is covered, what is excluded, how the vehicle is valued and how a claim is handled. Which products can be discussed at all depends on how the car is registered and how it is actually used.

Who this route is for

This route applies where the vehicle is a car, whether it is used personally or for permitted commercial purposes.

  • Owners of a hatchback, sedan, SUV or MUV used privately
  • Owners of a car used for permitted commercial purposes, such as a taxi or cab
  • First-time car owners who want the cover structures explained before deciding
  • Existing policyholders comparing own-damage and comprehensive / package structures
  • Owners who want to understand what optional add-ons actually change

Personal Use and Commercial Use

Use is a separate decision from vehicle type. Selecting a use on this website does not confirm eligibility for any specific product.

  • Personal Use — hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs and MUVs registered and used for personal, family and permitted private purposes.
  • Commercial Use — cars used for permitted commercial purposes, subject to registration, permit, actual use, insurer eligibility and policy terms.
  • The final classification depends on the RC classification, actual permitted use, the applicable insurer, underwriting and the product terms.
  • Where a car carries passengers for hire, the applicable permit and fitness position is generally relevant to what can be offered.

Scope

What this route generally covers

General guidance only. The applicable policy wording decides what is covered in any specific case.

What it generally covers

  • Covered legal liability toward third parties, where the policy includes that section
  • Covered accidental loss or damage to the insured car, where the policy includes the own-damage section
  • Insured perils as listed in the applicable policy wording
  • Optional add-ons, where the insurer offers them and they are selected and charged

What it generally does not cover

  • Normal wear and tear, depreciation and mechanical or electrical breakdown
  • Use outside what the policy and the car's registration permit
  • Anything the applicable policy wording lists as an exclusion
  • Consequential loss, unless an applicable section or add-on specifically addresses it

Optional

Optional add-ons commonly discussed

Add-ons are optional and subordinate to the base cover. One applies only where the insurer offers it, it is selected, it is charged and it is recorded on the policy.

  • Zero / Nil Depreciation

Where offered, it changes how depreciation is applied to covered part replacement in an own-damage claim.

  • Roadside Assistance

Where offered, it provides defined on-road support services within the insurer's stated scope and limits.

  • Engine Protection

Where offered, it extends cover to specified engine-related damage that the base policy would not address.

  • Return to Invoice

Where offered, it changes the basis of settlement in a total-loss or theft claim, subject to the insurer's conditions.

  • Consumables

Where offered, it covers specified consumable items used during a covered repair, as listed by the insurer.

  • Key Protection

Where offered, it addresses specified loss or damage to vehicle keys and lock sets within stated limits.

  • Tyre / Rim Protection

Where offered, it addresses specified tyre and rim damage that the base own-damage section may not cover.

  • NCB Protection

Where offered, it changes how the No Claim Bonus is treated after a permitted number of claims, subject to conditions.

Important terms

Insured Declared Value

The value assigned to the car for the purposes of the policy. It is generally the basis of settlement in a total-loss or theft claim, subject to the policy terms. It is agreed with the insurer, not set by this website.

Deductibles apply

A policy may carry a compulsory deductible and, where chosen, a voluntary one. The deductible is the part of a claim the policyholder bears.

No Claim Bonus

Where no claim was made in the preceding policy period, a reduction may be applied at renewal. The applicable slabs and conditions are set by the insurer and applicable rules.

Use has to match the registration

A car used differently from what its registration and policy permit can affect how a claim is treated. Where a privately registered car starts being used commercially, the insurer should be told.

Common mistakes

  • Treating comprehensive / package as a promise that every possible loss is covered
  • Assuming every add-on is included once a comprehensive policy is bought
  • Using a privately registered car for commercial hire without telling the insurer
  • Overlooking the deductible when comparing two policies
  • Allowing a break in cover and assuming the previous terms will be repeated

Claims

How a claim generally proceeds

Educational only. The applicable insurer decides every claim.

  1. Accident or loss occurs

Something happens that may give rise to a claim under the policy.

  2. Ensure immediate safety

Safety of the people involved comes first, before anything to do with the policy.

  3. Notify the appropriate authorities where required

Some incidents require the police or other authorities to be informed. Requirements vary by situation and applicable law.

  4. Inform the insurer promptly

Policies generally expect the insurer to be told about a loss without delay. The intimation channel is set by the insurer.

  5. Provide the required information and documents

The insurer states what it needs for the specific claim. CAREALL does not collect claim documents through this website.

  6. Inspection or assessment where applicable

The insurer may arrange an inspection or a survey before deciding how the claim is handled.

  7. Repair or settlement according to the policy

The outcome of a claim is decided by the applicable insurer under the policy wording and applicable law.

FAQs

Car questions

No. Comprehensive or package is a policy structure that generally combines the third-party liability and own-damage sections. What is actually covered, and what is excluded, is set by the specific policy wording.

Own damage is a separate section and, in some situations, can be arranged separately from the liability cover. Whether that is possible for your car depends on the applicable insurer, the product and the existing cover in force.

The Insured Declared Value is agreed with the applicable insurer under its own rules, taking into account the vehicle and its age. CAREALL does not set or guarantee it.

Personal use generally covers family, commuting and other permitted private purposes. Commercial use covers permitted business purposes such as a taxi, a cab or ride-hailing work. Which one applies depends on the car's registration and how it is actually used, and the classification is confirmed by the applicable insurer, not by this website.

No. You do not need to upload insurance documents or identity documents through this enquiry form. The applicable insurer or service process may request additional information later.
