Education

How motor insurance generally works

A motor insurance policy is a contract between the vehicle owner and an insurer. What it covers, what it excludes and how a claim is handled are all set out in the policy wording.

  1. The vehicle and its use are identified

The registration certificate, the vehicle category and the actual permitted use decide which products can be discussed at all.

  2. A cover structure is chosen

Third-party liability, own damage and comprehensive/package are different structures. Each one is defined by its own policy wording.

  3. Optional add-ons may be considered

Where an insurer offers them, add-ons extend or change specific parts of the cover. They are selected and charged separately.

  4. The insurer underwrites and issues

Acceptance, premium, conditions and any loading or exclusion are decided by the applicable insurer under its own underwriting rules.

Optional

Add extra protection if available for your vehicle and policy

Add-ons are optional and subordinate to the base cover. One applies only where the insurer offers it, it is selected, it is charged and it is recorded on the policy.

  • Zero / Nil Depreciation

Where offered, it changes how depreciation is applied to covered part replacement in an own-damage claim.

  • Roadside Assistance

Where offered, it provides defined on-road support services within the insurer's stated scope and limits.

  • Engine Protection

Where offered, it extends cover to specified engine-related damage that the base policy would not address.

  • Return to Invoice

Where offered, it changes the basis of settlement in a total-loss or theft claim, subject to the insurer's conditions.

  • Consumables

Where offered, it covers specified consumable items used during a covered repair, as listed by the insurer.

  • Key Protection

Where offered, it addresses specified loss or damage to vehicle keys and lock sets within stated limits.

  • Tyre / Rim Protection

Where offered, it addresses specified tyre and rim damage that the base own-damage section may not cover.

  • NCB Protection

Where offered, it changes how the No Claim Bonus is treated after a permitted number of claims, subject to conditions.

Owner-Driver Personal Accident Cover

Accident-related protection for an eligible owner-driver, subject to applicable policy, eligibility requirements and terms.

  • This is accident-related protection for the eligible owner-driver. It is not cover for damage to the vehicle.
  • Eligibility, the sum insured and the conditions are set by the applicable policy and law.
  • Where an eligible cover is already held, the requirement may be handled differently. This has to be checked for the specific case.

Before you enquire

What information may be needed later

The enquiry form does not ask for any of this. It is listed so you know what the applicable insurer or service process may request once a conversation starts.

  • Vehicle registration details
  • Previous policy information, where a policy already exists
  • Vehicle details such as make, model, variant and year
  • Driver information, where the insurer asks for it
  • Permit and fitness information, where applicable for commercial vehicles
  • Other insurer-specific or product-specific information

Nothing needs to be uploaded here

You do not need to upload insurance documents or identity documents through this enquiry form. The applicable insurer or service process may request additional information later.

How it works

The general assistance process

Four steps from choosing a vehicle to continuing the conversation on WhatsApp.

  1. Choose vehicle and use

Start from the vehicle you want to insure and tell us how it is actually used. This decides the route.

  2. Understand cover

Read what third-party, own-damage and comprehensive/package structures generally address before deciding.

  3. Tell CAREALL what you need

Share your name, mobile number and preferred language. No documents and no identity information are collected here.

  4. Continue on WhatsApp

Your enquiry is prepared as a WhatsApp message. You review it and send it when you are ready.

Claims

How a motor claim generally proceeds

This is educational only. CAREALL does not approve, assess, settle or guarantee any claim — the applicable insurer decides.

  1. Accident or loss occurs

Something happens that may give rise to a claim under the policy.

  2. Ensure immediate safety

Safety of the people involved comes first, before anything to do with the policy.

  3. Notify the appropriate authorities where required

Some incidents require the police or other authorities to be informed. Requirements vary by situation and applicable law.

  4. Inform the insurer promptly

Policies generally expect the insurer to be told about a loss without delay. The intimation channel is set by the insurer.

  5. Provide the required information and documents

The insurer states what it needs for the specific claim. CAREALL does not collect claim documents through this website.

  6. Inspection or assessment where applicable

The insurer may arrange an inspection or a survey before deciding how the claim is handled.

  7. Repair or settlement according to the policy

The outcome of a claim is decided by the applicable insurer under the policy wording and applicable law.

Terminology

Insurance words, explained plainly

The vocabulary you are most likely to meet when discussing a motor policy.

Third Party
The section of a motor policy that responds to covered legal liability toward another person or their property. Its scope is set by the policy wording and applicable law.
Own Damage
The section that responds to covered loss of or damage to the insured vehicle itself, subject to exclusions, deductibles and the applicable limits.
Comprehensive / Package
A policy structure that generally combines the third-party and own-damage sections. It does not mean that every possible loss is covered — the policy wording still decides.
Liability Only / Act Only
A policy structure limited to the liability cover required under applicable law. It does not address damage to the insured vehicle.
Bundled structures
Some vehicles are offered a policy whose liability and own-damage sections run for different periods. Where this applies, the exact terms are set by the insurer and applicable rules.
IDV — Insured Declared Value
The value assigned to the insured vehicle for the purposes of the policy. It is generally used as the basis of settlement in a total-loss or theft claim, subject to the policy terms.
Premium
The amount charged by the insurer for the cover. It depends on the vehicle, use, cover structure, add-ons, declared value, underwriting and applicable charges.
Deductible / Excess
The part of a claim the policyholder bears. A policy may carry a compulsory deductible and, where chosen, a voluntary one.
NCB — No Claim Bonus
A reduction applied at renewal where no claim was made in the preceding policy period. The applicable slabs and conditions are set by the insurer and applicable rules.
Policy period
The period during which the cover operates. Losses outside the policy period are not covered.
Renewal
Continuing cover for a further period. Renewing before the existing policy expires generally avoids a break in cover; a break may affect the terms offered.
Add-ons
Optional sections that extend or modify the base cover where the insurer offers them. They have to be selected, charged and recorded on the policy to apply.
Owner-driver personal accident cover
Accident-related protection for an eligible owner-driver, subject to the applicable policy, eligibility requirements and terms. It is not cover for damage to the vehicle.
Commercial vehicle documentation
For commercial vehicles, the registration, permit, fitness and actual permitted use are generally relevant to what can be offered. Requirements vary by vehicle, state and insurer.
Claim intimation
Informing the insurer about a loss. Policies generally expect prompt intimation; the process and timelines are set by the insurer and the policy wording.
